Blue Guava Gelato Strain Review
I do not enjoy standing in lines. My time is valuable. I instead could be creating or enjoying life. So when the Backback Boyz had their grand opening, I went the day after. There was no line at all, and I was able to get in and shop immediately. Also worth noting, the exclusive drops from the day before were still in stock. While there, I picked up a few different strains to review.
I must admit I was disappointed to see the model they adopted of $60 eighths that with tax are $75 out the door with no bulk discount. I hoped to see them adopt a Jungle Boys or LA Kush model where you could buy in bulk at a significantly discounted rate. Regardless, today I will be reviewing Blue Guava Gelato by the Backpack Boyz and 5 Points, one of the strains I picked up on that trip and an exclusive drop at the grand opening.
Blue Guava Gelato Genetics
When it comes to the genetics of Blue Guava Gelato, I have a theory on what the genetics are based on other Backpack Boyz Genetics. Now ‘bear’ with me, Blue Tommyz is the cross of Blue Gotti and Sunset Sherbert, indicating that the Backpack Boyz use Blue Gotti to cross strains to make them blue.
With that in mind and maintaining the same pattern, Blue Guava Gelato would be the cross of Blue Gotti and Guava Gelato. In contrast, Guava Gelato is Sherbinski’s cross of Thin Mint GSC and Sunset Sherbert. While the genetics of Blue Gotti is unknown.
Appearance
My buds are a bit on the smaller side but are fire nonetheless. The majority of the Blue Guava Gelato buds’ appearance is dominated by more light green and orange hues, while a few other buds in my bag have a deep purple appearance. All the colas have a healthy layer of resinous trichome crystals and a lot of well-manicured orange hairs.
Aroma
The nose of this strain is a complex mix of tropical, musty, sweet, floral, earthy notes leaning toward a more traditional Guava Gelato strain. I have seen speculation online that Blue Gotti is a Blue Dream and Gelato cross, and I think I might be getting hints of Blueberry from the genetic lineage. Also, the lighter hue buds have a similar appearance to Blue Dream.
The Inhale and the Exhale
The inhale of these flowers is a sweet funky tropical adventure that leads me to believe that the Blueberry Haze cross of Blue Dream is in this lineage. The inhale begins with sweet, tropical, floral, earthy notes that evolve into hazy blueberry notes. In contrast, the exhale goes in a more traditional Guava Gelato direction with smooth, creamy berry notes.
The Smoking Experience
I found the smoking experience of the Blue Guava Gelato to be delightful and pleasing. The flowers burned clean and lead to a very smooth smoke. I found the aroma and flavor profile only added to the smoking experience as both were so forward and complex.
The High
One of the great things about everything being a cross of Gelato is that the Gelato High is very clean and functional. Blue Guava Gelato by the Backpack Boyz and 5 Points is no different. I found the high to be slightly more of a head high than a body high that I would enjoy any time of the day.
So was Blue Guava Gelato worth the money, and would I repurchase it?
I see a trend of my peers in the reviewing community moving on and exploring many new up-and-comers, complaining of the quality dropping off with Backpack Boyz. While it is common for quality control to become a problem as you get bigger, and granted, I enjoyed these flowers a lot and did not see any quality control issues. I am more disappointed with the pricing model of $75 an eighth out the door when purchasing directly from the source. As a heavy smoker, I like to buy in bulk, smoke the best, and make my money go further. Not only that, this was an opportunity for them to thank the people who supported them by creating a consumer-friendly model in a place where they control pricing.
